Birmingham woman sentenced to prison in 2018 stabbing death of longtime boyfriend

A Birmingham woman has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to the 2018 stabbing death of her longtime boyfriend.

Kuterah Benita Rich, 56, was initially charged with murder in the slaying of 50-year-old Antonio Pettaway. In late November 2023, she pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge Alaric May on Tuesday sentenced Rich to 20 years in prison with five years to serve. Previously out on bond, Rich was booked into the Jefferson County Jail following sentencing.

Pettaway was killed Sept. 2, 2018.

North Precinct officers responded about 9:20 p.m. that Saturday to 2525 37th Avenue North on a report of a person stabbed. Once on the scene, they found Pettaway suffering from at least one stab wound.

Pettaway was taken to UAB Hospital where he later died from his injury.

Rich and Pettaway had been together at least six years, according to family members.

Friends and family at the time said Pettaway’s was a son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and a friend to many.

Pettaway grew up in Birmingham and was the father of three sons. Family said he loved to barbecue and was always funny.
