Birmingham woman pleads with city to revoke tow company’s license: ‘Please shut them down’

Birmingham healthcare worker Evette Crumpton pleaded with the city council Tuesday to revoke the business license of local towing company Parking Enforcement Systems (PES).

“Please shut them down. Please revoke their business license before someone gets hurt,” Crumpton said of PES at a public hearing the city held on Aug. 29. The hearing was the second where drivers could come air their concerns about towing practices downtown.

Crumpton’s story is one of many told by people who have had their vehicles towed from downtown lots, often by PES, which has contracts with many private lots in the center city.

After attending an event downtown last week, Crumpton said she returned to find her Mercedes smart truck missing from its spot and a notification on her phone letting her know the vehicle had been damaged.

“I went to an event, and we were instructed to park in a particular parking lot,” she said. “When I arrived back at the parking lot, it’s 10 o’clock at night. My vehicle is gone. I have no idea what’s going on. I’m a female. It’s dark and I’m scared.
