Birmingham woman indicted in 2023 killing of man in driveway of abandoned Jefferson County house

A 36-year-old Birmingham woman has been indicted in the 2023 shooting death of a man in northeast Jefferson County.

A Jefferson County grand jury on March 7 indicted Daysha Nicole Bennett with murder in the slaying of 51-year-old Anthony Dewain Word, according to court records made public Monday.

Bennett was initially arrested on the charge in 2024.

She has remained held in the Jefferson County Jail since her Feb. 26, 2024, arrest.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just before 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, to a report of shots fired and a person down in the 5700 block of Dewey Heights Road.

They arrived to find Word unresponsive in the driveway of an abandoned house. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:12 p.m.

Authorities at the time said witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area. Law enforcement radio communicates indicated as many as 20 shots were fired.

Bennett and Word were acquaintances. A motive has not been disclosed.
