Birmingham woman flying high (to Portugal!) after competing on ‘The Price Is Right’
Korliss Datcher radiated excitement during her Tuesday appearance on “The Price Is Right,” and who could blame her?
The Birmingham woman won a trip to Portugal — a prize worth more than $9,000 — on the Nov. 1 episode of the CBS game show.
Datcher, an athletic director and diversity coordinator at Advent Episcopal School, was pulled from the studio audience about halfway into the hourlong show, as the announcer told her to “Come on down!”
On “The Price Is Right,” hosted by comedian Drew Carey, contestants compete to win cash and prizes by guessing the prices of merchandise in various games. The show got its start in 1956, was revamped in 1972 and remains popular on daytime TV.
Datcher won a camera collection as her first prize, guessing the cost of the gear and coming closest to the actual price of $623. (She estimated it at $600, competing against three other contestants). For a follow-up, Datcher aced a game called Check Out — guessing the prices of five grocery items within $2 of the actual total — and won a vacation for two to Portugal.
(Side note: The grocery items Carey showed Datcher during Check Out included a package of 10 Sister Schubert’s dinner rolls, a Southern favorite with ties to Alabama. For the record, Datcher guessed the price as $5.25; the rolls cost $4.99, Carey said. )

Datcher’s prize package for her win in Check Out: A round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Lisbon and a six-night stay in a suite at the Corpo Santo Hotel. According to the announcer on “The Price is Right,” the trip is worth $9,308.
Later, Datcher spun a wheel to try for a spot in the final game with the biggest prizes, known as the Showcase Round. She lost to another contestant. As the wheel turned, though, Datcher gave shout-outs to her family in Alabama and colleagues at Advent Episcopal School.
She left the show a winner, if the not top winner, with prizes totaling nearly $10,000.
Episodes of “The Price Is Right” are filmed in advance, and Datcher was in the studio audience for a taping of the show in September, according to her Facebook page.
“The highlight of this trip to LA was my time on The Price is Right!” Datcher said in a Sept. 10 Facebook post.
A viewing party for her “Price Is Right” episode is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Avondale Brewing Co., 201 41st St. South in Birmingham, according to Datcher’s Facebook page. The TV series, which airs weekdays on CBS, also streams on Paramount+.
Datcher is an athletic director at Advent Episcopal School in Birmingham, as well as its diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging coordinator, according to her LinkedIn profile. She’s also worked as a psychology professor at Lawson State Community College.
Datcher has experience as a game show contestant, appearing on “Family Feud” with her husband, Kelvin Datcher, and his family in 2012. Kelvin is a senior advisor for special projects for Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. Korliss and Kelvin Datcher have two children, Zachary and Zoe.
In 2016, Datcher was selected as a member of the Disney Moms Parks Panel, offering vacation tips and advice for prospective visitors. Datcher has blogged about Disney parks, encouraging “more Black families and families of color to experience the Disney magic,” according to LinkedIn. She also hosted a podcast, “Your Disney Homegirl.”
