Birmingham Water Works brings ‘Hydrate the City’ summer series to area parks

The Birmingham Water Works is presenting a series of events at parks throughout the region to highlight summertime outdoor safety.

The “Hydrate the City” pop-up events in parks are designed to raise awareness of the drinking water as temperatures rise throughout the summer months. Water Works representatives typically provide water, distribute hydration tips and give away promotional items.

“We want to educate our customers on the importance of staying safe and staying hydrated,” said Derrick Murphy, Water Works assistant general manager for engineering and maintenance. “These events provide resources for the community and allow us to tell customers about the high-quality water we provide.”

The “Hydrate the City” series began Friday at Railroad Park in Birmingham.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people drink eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes while outside in the heat.

Proper hydration is especially important for vulnerable populations such as infants, young children, the elderly and people working outdoors.

The series continues at East Lake Park on June 7 during the Fishing Rodeo and concludes July 25 at Rickwood Caverns State Park in Warrior.

All events are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
