Birmingham warming station will open as temperatures dip below freezing

As temperatures are expected to fall below freezing, the city of Birmingham and Jimmie Hale Mission, a local homeless shelter, will open its nightly warming station Monday, Jan. 6 through Thursday, Jan. 9, from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Residents in need of warm shelter are invited to Jimmie Hale Mission, located at 3420 2nd Ave North. Food will be provided. Shelter for women and children only will also be provided at Pathways, located at 409 Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. Monday, Jan. 6 through Thursday, Jan. 9 from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“When the temperature drops below freezing, our warming station provides a safe, warm refuge for women experiencing homelessness – those still on the streets because there aren’t enough shelter beds available,” Pathways posted on their Instagram.

A free shuttle service will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. for those needing transportation to the warming stations. The pickup location will be at the main entrance of Linn Park at the intersection of Park Place and 20th Street North. Return transportation will be provided each morning.

“This critical service requires funds for staffing, coats, blankets, microwaveable food, warm drinks, and more,” Pathways posted on their Instagram.

Jimmie Hale Mission is also accepting donations of twin-sized washable blankets, fresh fruit, paper plates, napkins, plastic flatware, soft breakfast bars or snacks.
