Birmingham is preparing for freezing temperatures by opening its warming station to residents starting Thursday night.

Temperatures are expected to dip into lows between 28 degrees and 34 degrees throughout the next week. Warm shelter and food will be provided at Jimmie Hale Mission’s Shepura facility through Tuesday, Jan. 2, the city announced. The warming station, located at 3420 2nd Ave. North, will be open each night between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Residents who need transportation to get to the shelter can be picked up at the following locations:

• Brother Bryan Park at 2100 Magnolia Ave. S,
• Faith Chapel Care Center at 921 2nd Ave. North,
• Linn Park at 20th St. North, and
• Boutwell Auditorium, 1930 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd.

The Jimmie Hale Mission, a nonprofit with homeless shelters and other services, took on providing warming stations for the city last year.
