Birmingham teen held on $301,000 bond after crash into Brombergs jewelry store during police chase

A Birmingham teen has been charged with more than a half dozen crimes after authorities said he crashed into a Mountain Brook jewelry store during a weekend police chase.

Ricardo Antoine Adams Jr., 19, is charged with attempting to elude, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree receiving stolen property, unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, resisting arrest, second-degree possession of marijuana and being a minor in possession of alcohol, police announced Monday.

Adams is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $301,000.

The crash happened about 2:40 a.m. Saturday at Brombergs in Mountain Brook Village.

Police said an officer was conducting routine patrols around 2:35 a.m. in the 3600 block of Montevallo Road when a vehicle traveling recklessly and at a high rate of speed was spotted.

The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver continued until losing control while crossing Cahaba Road and crashing into the storefront.

Authorities said Adams then fled into to the store and was taken into custody about 25 minutes later.

The Nissan Titan pickup truck Adams was driving was stolen, police said.

Ricky Bromberg, company president, said Saturday, “It looks like a bomb’s gone off. It’s a blessing nobody was here, nobody got hurt.”

Had the truck been just about 10 feet to the left, it would have crashed through the ground-to-roof glass store front.

“That would have been a complete and utter disaster,’’ Bromberg said.

There is significant property damage, but no merchandise was lost.

“It’s a big deal but it could have been a disaster,’’ he said.

The store has remained open despite the damage.

Jail records show Adams was arrested last month on charges of receiving stolen property certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm during a violent crime.
