Birmingham stocks pick up gains despite down day on Wall Street
Despite a down day on Wall Street, some local and state stocks managed to pulled out some modest gains on Thursday.
This trio of big companies sported the only gains of more than 2%: Toyota (2.4%), Amazon (2.2%) and 3M (2.1%).
Some Birmingham-area stocks saw lesser gains, but gains nonetheless: U.S. Steel (1.2%), Nucor (1.1%) and Warrior Met Coal (.8%).
Overall, a late-afternoon fade left stocks modestly lower Thursday as Wall Street closed out its first losing month since February.
The S&P 500 gave up an early gain to close 0.2% lower. The benchmark index ended August down 1.8%, though a four-day winning streak going back to last week helped chip away at the severity of the monthly decline.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5%, while the Nasdaq composite eked out a 0.1% gain.
