Birmingham Stallions choose Bo Scarbrough in UFL Super Draft

Bo Scarbrough will be back with the Birmingham Stallions in 2024 after the team selected the former Alabama running back in the United Football League Super Draft on Monday.

It might seem an odd draft pick, since Scarbrough has been with the Stallions for the past two USFL seasons, but he wasn’t the only Birmingham player drafted by Birmingham on Monday.

In addition to choosing Scarbrough in the seventh round, the Stallions also brought back former Jasper High School and UAB wide receiver Myron Mitchell in the 11th round as well as quarterback Jalen Morton in the third round, long snapper Ryan Langan in the fifth round, offensive tackle Jahmir Ross-Johnson in the eighth round, running back Zaquandre White in the ninth round and fullback Bobby Holly in the 10th round.

Monday’s draft was another step in the merger of the USFL and the XFL into the United Football League, which will kick off its season on March 30 with Birmingham visiting the Arlington Renegades.

The UFL took four franchises apiece from the USFL and XFL. But that left four teams from each league out the game.

The new league allowed each of the surviving teams to protect 42 players on its roster. On Jan. 5, each UFL team could draft up to 20 players from the defunct teams of its former league.

In Monday’s draft, the eight UFL teams could draft any player who hadn’t been protected or picked in the earlier dispersal draft and were not restricted to drafting only from the teams in their former league.

The Super Draft lasted 14 rounds, but every team did not pick all the way through. The Memphis Showboats were the only team that made a selection in the 13th and 14th rounds.

Former Alabama State running back Ezra Gray and former Jacksonville State tight end Jared Scott were first-round selections in the UFL Super Draft.

The San Antonio Brahmas made quarterback Quinten Dormady the first selection on Monday. The Showboats followed with center Jared Thomas.

After playing for Memphis last season, Gray went to the Houston Roughnecks at No. 3. Scott went from the New Orleans Breakers to the Renegades at No. 7.

Other players from Alabama high schools and colleges chosen in the Super Draft were defensive tackle T.J. Barnes (Enterprise), who moved from the Renegades to the D.C. Defenders; wide receiver Damion Willis (Troy), who moved from the Seattle Sea Dragons to the Showboats; and offensive lineman John Yarbrough (Homewood), who moved from the XFL Houston Roughnecks to the Brahmas.

On Monday, Birmingham also picked:

· Offensive lineman Larnel Coleman in the first round

· Safety Alijah Holder (Houston Gamblers in 2023) in the second round

· Cornerback Terrell Bonds (Pittsburgh Maulers in 2023) in the fourth round

· Cornerback Madre Harper in the sixth round

Former Birmingham players chosen by other teams included cornerback Nate Brooks by the Michigan Panthers in the first round, safety Christian McFarland by Memphis in third round and defensive tackle Willie Henry by Memphis in the 14th round.

A former Northridge High School standout and veteran of seven NFL games, Scarbrough joined the Stallions in the fifth game of the 2022 season and ran for 352 yards and one touchdown on 84 carries to finish 10th in the league in rushing despite playing in only six games.

After recording 39 yards on 11 carries and three receptions for 26 yards in the Stallions’ 31-17 victory over the New Orleans Breakers in the semifinals, Scarbrough ran for 135 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries in the 2022 USFL Championship Game. He scored on a 36-yard run and also had a 70-yard run in Birmingham’s 33-30 victory over the Philadelphia Stars.

The Stallions won the USFL championship again in 2023, but without a contribution from Scarbrough. He was limited to two rushing attempts in the season-opening game before being sidelined by a knee injury. Scarbrough had surgery to remove a bone spur from his knee and did not return to the field.
