Birmingham spring sports: Vestavia Hills boys tennis wins 3 matches
Vestavia Hills won three boys tennis matches last week and also participated in a Tennessee tournament during Birmingham area spring sports action.
The Rebels (17-1) beat Oak Mountain 8-1, Thompson 9-0 and St. Paul’s 8-1 before competing in the 66th annual Chattanooga Rotary Tournament, one of the top high school tennis tournaments in the Southeast with 16 teams participating.
In singles during the week, Luke Bedwell, John Michael Yanosky, Brayden Helms, Kade Nelson and Andrew Pipkin were each 2-0 while Jake Anthony, Collier Clemmons, George Wright, Daniel Cather and Rohan Parekh were all 1-0.
In doubles, Jake Anthony and Luke Bedwell, Andrew Pipkin and Ben Cusmariu, Louis Kolettis and Arav Singh and George Wright and Daniel Cather were all 1-0.

CLASS 7A
Vestavia Hills beat Oak Mountain and Thompson and lost to St. Paul’s.

BOYS SOCCER
CLASS 7A
Top-ranked Oak Mountain (14-2-1, 4-0 area) beat Spain Park 7-1 and Chelsea 3-0.
Ranked No. 12 in the nation by MaxPreps, the Eagles got a hat trick from Gabe Capoicci against Spain Park while Nate Joiner and Caleb Smith each scored two goals in the win.
Om Shrestha, Capocci and James Whatley scored against Chelsea while Joey Schneider posted the shutout in the net.
CLASS 6A
Top-ranked Mountain Brook (15-1-4, 5-0 area) beat Pell City 3-0 and played fourth-ranked Homewood to a scoreless tie then won three games to capture the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, Tenn., beating Davidson 3-1 along with Tennessee teams Fred Page (returning state champion) 3-2 and Father Ryan (state runnerup) 5-2.
Coach Joe Webb earned career win No. 490 in Tennessee.
GIRLS SOCCER
CLASS 6A
Calera (6-6-2) posted two wins over Chilton County, 8-2 and 10-0 and on senior night.
Sophomore twins Reece and Brianna Collier accounted for six goals, Reece with four, while Natalie Doerfler scored 2 goals and had 2 assists, and Stephanie Alvarenga and Wendy Cervantes each scored a goal.
Second-ranked Briarwood Christian (10-2-1) beat Westminster-Oak Mountain 8-4 and Indian Springs 6-0.
Senior Abigail Hoaglund and sophomore Taylor Leib each scored 4 goals while sophomore Brooklyn Barnett had 2 goals and senior Jolee Giadrosich, senior Piper Eighmy, sophomore Zoe Eighmy and eighth-grader Ava Starbuck each scored a goal.
Senior Bradford Latta, junior Erin Gilbert and goalkeepers senior Lindsay Weigant and freshmen Sophia Stubbs led the defense.
BASEBALL
CLASS 7A
Seventh-ranked Spain Park (17-4) beat Tuscaloosa County 5-4, Thompson 5-4 and Briarwood 5-3 last week.
Matthew Widra had a home run and RBI against Tuscaloosa County while James Battersby was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Cole Edwards was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBIs and Clay Spencer had a hit and RBI’
Jacob Tobias pitched the win, allowing 3 hits and no earned runs with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings.
Cole Edwards was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI against Thompson, Tobias was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Spencer had a hit and RBI, Battersby had 2 RBIs and JohnRobert Thompson was 2-for-5 while also holding the Warriors hitless and striking out 8 with an earned run in 7 innings.
Evan Smallwood gave up 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and no runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Smallwood was 2-for-3 with 2 runs against Briarwood and Widra was 2-for-3, with a run and RBI.
Tobias pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, no earned runs and striking out 8.
Oak Mountain was 2-2 last week with wins over Springville 3-2 and Thompson 2-0 and losses to Vestavia Hills 8-3 and Prattville 4-3 (8 innings).
Matt Heiberger pitched 7 innings with 11 strikeouts against Thompson and was 6-for-10 at the plate for the week with 3 RBIs, 2 runs and a home run.
CLASS 6A
Minor (15-4) won 3 games, beating Holy Spirit 13-6, Mae Jemison 13-2 and Huffman 15-1.
Junior Tylan Amerson was 10-for-12 at the plate for the week with 7 runs, 3 RBIs, a walk and 10 steals.
In the win against Mae Jemison, five pitchers threw an inning each to combine for the no-hitter in the 5 inning mercy rule game. Kareem Keye and Ethan Bucher each struck out 3, Corey Richardson Jr. struck out 2 and Elijah Fuller and Xavier Weldon also pitched.
Parker (16-4, 3-0 area) was 3-1 last week with two wins over Wenonah 13-1, 7-0, and Pleasant Grove 7-6 and a loss to Mountain Brook 19-1. The second win over Wenonah and the win against Pleasant Grove came in the 14th William Cap Brown Southwest Hitaway Classic.
The Thundering Herd will play Clay-Chalkville Monday afternoon for the championship.
Monte Henley was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a double against Pleasant Grove, Donellrious Scott was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and DeCorian Welch was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs, a triple and 5 steals against Wenonah.
CLASS 5A
Fifth-ranked Shelby County (11-6, 2-0 area) swept Central-Clay County 9-5 on Tuesday and 12-8 on Thursday in area play.
Carter Sheehan was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs on Tuesday while Jace Bolan had a hit and 2 RBIs and Noah Reed had a hit, RBI and 2 runs.
Coach Cory Hamrick — he played on Birmingham-Southern’s 2001 NAIA national championship team — earned win No. 100 at Shelby County.
In Thursday’s game, Logan Starnes was 2-for-4 with a grand slam, double, 3 runs and 5 RBIs while Grant Robinson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run, Sheehan had a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs and Austin Wilson had a double and 2 RBIs.
Colby Matherson pitched the win, striking out 8 in 5 innings.
Sixth-ranked John Carroll (12-6) won 3 games, beating Wenonah 23-0 and 18-0 and Chilton County 15-5.
Gabe Wilbur was 3-for-3 and Seth Seidenfaden had a double and 3 RBIs in the first game against Wenonah while Wilbur had a hit and 5 RBIs and William Gignilliat was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs in the second Wenonah game.
Against Chilton County, Jackson Miller was 4-for-5 with a double, Mitchell Nutter was 3-for-4 and Wilbur was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs.
Homewood (15-2) won four games, beating Shades Valley 8-2, Shades Valley 15-5 and 18-3 and Moody 4-3.
Sophomore Jack Ross pitched a complete Game with 10 strikeouts and was 5-for-8 at the plate with 5 RBIs for the week. Freshman Levi Nickoli was 6-for-9 with a home run and 4 RBIs and picked up his fourth save on the season.
Pleasant Grove (8-12) was 2-2 with two wins over Fairfield, 15-2, 22-16 and losses to Clay Chalkville 14-5 and Parker 7-6.
Brandon Whatley hit .636 for the week with 7 RBIs and 8 runs while Andre Watts batted .646 with 4 RBIs and 5 runs and Elijah Hill hit .545 with 5 RBIs and 2 runs.
Kaleb Freeman pitched 11 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run with 16 strikeouts and a .190 batting average against.
CLASS 4A
Oak Grove (11-10) was 3-2 with wins over Corner 13-3, West Blocton 7-0 and 6-4 and losses to West Blocton 6-2 and American Christian 12-2.
SOFTBALL
CLASS 6A
Fourth-ranked Helena (15-8) beat Pelham 7-1 and lost to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 6-4.
Presley Lively was 5-for-7 for the week with 5 steals and 5 runs while Hayden Traywick was 3-for-7 with 3 RBIs and a double and Amelia Powell was 4-for-8 with a run and RBI.
TRACK AND FIELD
Parker boys team finished second at Saturday’s meet at Corner while the girls team was fourth.
Boys first-place winners were Jordan Crawford in the shot put (44-5), Naeem Offord in the 200-meter run (22.2) and Zo Beavers in the 1,600-meter run The girls 4×100-meter relay (Carroll, Woods, Ray and Nash) also finished first.
Boys second-place finishers were Chancellor Sparks in the 100-meter, Demetrius Gordon in the 1,600-meter, Josh White in the 400-meter, Cantrell Drakes in both the long Jump and triple jump and the 4×100-meter relay (Drakes, Offord, White and Sparks). The girls 4×400 (Hill, Harris, James and Felder) was also second.
Finishing third-place were Nathan Henley in the boys 400-meter and Camelia Mosley in the girls long jump.
Boys fourth-place finishers were Jeremiah Beaman in the shot put, Naeem Offord in the 400-meter, Zo Beavers in the 800-meter and Malik Muhammad in the high jump. Girls in fourth place were Leah Ray in both the 100 and 200, Jordin Hill in the 800, Teralyn Hill in both the high jump and long jump and Camelia Mosley in shot put.
