Birmingham spring sports: Thompson starts baseball season undefeated

Thompson has started the high school baseball season with 16 straight wins in Birmingham area spring sports action.

The Class 7A Warriors (16-0) won 4 games last week, beating Bibb County 7-0, Madison Central (Miss.) 8-0, Calera 7-1 and Pell City 12-4.

Tucker Arrington led Thompson at the plate with a .600 average for the week. The junior had a .818 on-base with 1,418 OPS, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, a walk, was hit by 5 pitches and had no strikeouts.

Miles Mitchell batted .571 with a .600 on-base, 1,243 OPS, 5 RBIs, 4 runs and no strikeouts.

Landon Alton pitched a 3-hitter, striking out 10 with a walk and no earned runs in 7 innings.

Zachary Wyatt allowed 4 hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts and no earned runs in 7 innings.

BASEBALL

CLASS 7A

Hewitt Trussville (11-3) was 4-1 with wins over Mortimer Jordan 11-1, Springville 7-0, Auburn 8-5 and Opelika 6-5 and a loss to defending class champion Central Phenix City 6-5.

Brett Moseley hit .462 for the week with 2 triples, a home run, 5 RBIs and 7 runs while Kurt Kizer hit .357 with a double and 8 RBIs.

Oak Mountain (8-6) was 1-2 with a win over Briarwood 3-1 and losses to Hueytown 6-4 and Northridge 8-3.

Matt Heiberger pitched 5 innings against Briarwood with 11 strikeouts.

Spain Park (12-3) was 3-1 last week, beating Florence 6-0 and Huntsville 8-2 and splitting with Hoover, winning 7-6 and losing 9-4.

James Battersby was 7-for-15 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs while Cole Edwards was 6-for-15 with 6 RBIs and Clay Spencer was 6-for-17 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs.

Lucas Thornton pitched a 7-inning shutout, striking out 7 with no walks, CJ Gross struck out 7 while allowing an earned run in 7 innings and JohnRobert Thompson pitched 6 innings, striking out 5 and allowing an earned run.

Vestavia Hills (10-2) won 3 games, beating Cullman 10-0 and Gardendale 12-6 and 10-6.

Jackson Harris batted .444 with 4 runs, 6 RBIs, 2 walks and a home run while William Peerson hit .800 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs, and 2 walks. John Paul Head batted .500 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 2 walks, Hudson Walburn hit .375 with 4 runs, 4 RBI, 4 walks and a home run and John Martin Richter batted .400 with a run and 4 RBIs.

Bruce Littleton pitched 4 innings, allowing a hit with 6 strikeouts and no earned runs while Matthew Ledbetter threw 2 innings, surrendering a hit with 4 strikeouts and no earned runs. Cannon Cherry pitched 3 innings with 3 strikeouts and no earned runs and Ryan Vermillion pitched 3 innings, allowing a hit with 5 strikeouts.

CLASS 6A

Hueytown (8-6) won 3 games, beating Oak Mountain 6-4, McAdory 8-7 and Pinson Valley 18-2.

Aaron Wallace was 9-for-10 (.900 average) with 6 RBIs and also pitched 5 1/3 innings, earning a win and a save with 7 strikeouts.

Sylas Amick batted .500 with 3 doubles and 7 RBIs.

Mortimer Jordan (8-6) was 1-4 last week with a 4-0 win over Leeds and losses to Hewitt-Trussville 11-1 and Alexandria 3-1 and 8-2.

Konner Keplinger is batting .333 for the season with 15 hits, 4 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs and 11 RBIs while Cole Lowe is also hitting .333 with 11 hits, 12 runs, a double, home run and 6 RBIs.

Kepplinger is also 3-2 on the mound with 65 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings with an 0.65 ERA while Coleman Maldonado is 2-0 with 8 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.

CLASS 5A

John Carroll (5-6) split two games on Saturday, beating Pelham 9-6 and losing to Mountain Brook 22-7.

Against Mountain Brook:

Jackson Miller was 3-for-4 with a double against Mountain Brook while CJ Okon was 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.

Tyler Black was 2-for-4 with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs, including a game-winning grand slam against Pelham.

Pleasant Grove (3-8) beat Tarrant 14-0 and lost to Minor 6-5.

Andre Watts had 3 hits, including a triple and 2 RBIs and Kenyon Gunn had 3 hits with 2 RBIs.

Sam Thompson threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 6 while Demari Williams threw 5 innings with no earned runs and striking out 13.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 7A

Chelsea (4-10-1) was 1-3 with a win over Brooks 3-0 and losses to Spain Park 3-1, Hartselle 9-8 and Pell City 4-3.

Kathryn Bryars batted .385 for the week while Claire Purkey hit .364 and Maia Harris batted .333.

Julie Amacher allowed no earned runs and Sydney Carroll posted a 2.33 ERA.

Hoover (10-3) split a pair of extra-inning games, beating Tuscaloosa County 8-7 in 12 innings and falling to Hartselle 3-2 in 10 innings.

Carolyne Hecklinski batted .667 for the Bucs while Ki Davis hit .429.

Oliva Christian threw all 10 innings against Hartselle and pitched in for relief against Tuscaloosa County.

CLASS 6A

Clay-Chalkville beat Homewood 6-4 last week.

Skylar Swain was 2-for-3 with a single and a 2-run home run that proved to be the game-winner.

The defense was led by center fielder LaDonna Scott with two strong catches and a double play.

Anna Campbell pitched a complete game with 5 strikeouts and allowing 3 earned runs.

Gardendale (15-6) was 9-1 last week with wins over Haleyville 11-1, Austin 4-3, Center Point 17-0, Oak Grove 10-4, Lawrence County 8-6, Cordova 12-2, Winston County 9-0, Oak Grove 6-3 and Curry 7-6 and a loss to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 7-6.

Sophie Gant and Miya Covington led the Rockets.

Helena (11-4) beat Pelham 20-1 as Presley Lively was 4-for-4 with 3 runs, 2 RB’s and 3 steals.

Victoria Mauterer was 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs, a home run and double and 2 runs and Allie Graydon was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, 2 home runs and 3 runs.

Hueytown (6-6-1) beat McAdory 5-3 as winning pitcher Bryanna Kemp struck out 11.

Kemp, Kylie Kennedy, Madison Noelle Smith and Madelyn Vaughn each had a hit while Kemp and Vaughn added 2 RBIs each.

CLASS 4A

Corner (8-2) is 3-2 in its last five games, beating Gardendale 1-0, Sylvania 5-4 and Pleasant Valley 8-0 while losing to Albertville 10-1 and Curry 5-3.

Katie Blizard had 5 singles, a double, run and RBI and batted .429 with an on-base of .467 while Olivia Cummings had a single, 3 doubles, a triple and 2 RBIs for a .417 average with .533 on-base.

Lauren Greathouse allowed 4 runs, 5 walks and 2 hit-by-pitches.

BOYS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Second-ranked Oak Mountain (10-2-1) lost to Fort Payne 1-0 and tied Vestavia Hills 1-1.

Om Shrestha had the goal against Vestavia Hills with an assist by Nate Joiner.

CLASS 6A

Pelham (8-3-2) beat Northridge 6-2 and eighth-ranked Indian Springs 3-0 to go 2-0 in Area 8.

Raul Jacobo had his second area shutout in goal, both coming over top 10teams. He had 6 saves in the Indian Springs game to earn the shutout.

GIRLS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Second-ranked Vestavia Hills (10-2) beat Thompson 5-1 and top-ranked Oak Mountain 1-0.

Addison Mizerany, Anna Towry, Sarah Frances Gillroy, Anna Claire Black and Lola McMillian scored in the Thompson game while Catherine Myrick led with two assists.

Mackenzie Bridgwaters scored the winning goal against Oak Mountain while goalkeeper Rosemary Gill recorded the shutout.

CLASS 6A

Third-ranked Briarwood Christian (6-2-1) posted two shutouts, beating Calera 10-0 and Bayside Academy 6-0.

Senior Abigail Hoaglund scored 5 goals, sophomore Taylor Leib and senior Jolee Giadrosich each had 4 goals, sophomore Brooklyn Barnett scored 2 goals and junior Erin Gilbert added a goal.

Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Weigant and freshman goalkeeper Sophia Stubbs combined for 2 shutouts.

Calera (3-6-1) was 1-2 last week with a win over Montevallo 10-0 and losses to Briarwood 1-0 and Thompson 2-1.

Sophomore Brianna Collier had 13 takeaways against Thompson and 10 against Briarwood game and scored a goal against Montevallo.

Sophomore Reece Collier scored the goal against Thompson with an assist by senior Wendy Cervantes.

Goalkeeper Abbie Crouse had 19 saves.

CLASS 7A

Vestavia Hills (12-1) beat Tuscaloosa County last week 9-0.

CLASS 6A

Mountain Brook (8-1) has beaten Hoover 7-2, Montgomery Academy 8-1, Spain Park 9-0, Northridge 9-0, Helena 9-0, Homewood 8-1, Pelham 9-0 and

Briarwood 9-0 with a loss to Vestavia Hills 5-4.

Singles No. 3 Thomas Austin No. 4 Guy Mitchell and No. 5 Max Gayden are all undefeated as is No. 3 doubles Guy Mitchell and Thomas Austin.
