Birmingham police shoot suspect after shots fired during traffic stop on I-20/59
Birmingham police shot someone Wednesday afternoon after a chase briefly blocked traffic on I-20/59 near the Birmingham airport.
It was not immediately clear how badly the person was injured.
The incident started just before 4 p.m. during a car chase.
A suspect reportedly fired shots at police on the interstate. It was not immediately clear if anybody was injured at that scene.
An alert was put out for officers need all possible assistance.
The suspect was shot in the 4700 block of 13th Avenue North and left the scene with Birmingham firefighters and a police escort. The suspect reportedly ran to the neighborhood from the interstate.
Chief Scott Thurmond and all top department officials are at the scene on 13th Avenue. The ATF and ALEA are at the scene and the county’s Star 1 helicopter is flying over.
