Birmingham police officer injured after being struck by car

A car collided with a Birmingham patrol vehicle early Sunday morning, causing injuries to three people, including a police officer.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, a Chevrolet Camaro T-boned a patrol vehicle around 4:46 a.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue South and 30th Street South, likely after running a stop sign.

The Camaro, with a male driver and female passenger inside, caught on fire. Both people were able to exit the burning vehicle and were taken to the hospital. The Birmingham police officer also was taken to the UAB Hospital, according to police.

The department said the driver and police officer had serious injuries but are in stable condition.

This vehicle accident is still under further investigation.
