Birmingham police close probe of dog deaths, as woman who left them in hot car has died

Authorities said the woman they believed left three dogs to die in a hot vehicle earlier this year is now dead.

Birmingham police on Friday morning distributed photos of the woman asking the public to help confirm identity. A short time later, police officials said they learned the woman was recently found dead on the city’s southwest side.

No foul play was suspected in the woman’s death.

The animals – two dogs and a puppy – died Aug. 22.

Birmingham police and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society responded to the scene at the Citgo gas station on Bush Boulevard that night.

When GBHS got on the scene, Birmingham police officers had broken out the window and were applying cool towels and water, but one of the dogs had already died from heat stroke.

The animal control officer rushed the two remaining dogs, a female adult, and a puppy, to Steel City Emergency Clinic. Veterinary teams worked late into the night but were not able to save either.

The animal cruelty investigation has been ongoing for months.

The woman had not been charged with any crime before she died.

Police said today that they had received video surveillance evidence and information from the woman on the night they found the dogs, that showed she left the dogs because she was being chased by a man with a shotgun. The police said the evidence showed the woman may not have intentionally left the dogs to die.

With confirmation that the woman is dead, police said Friday, the investigation is now over.
