Birmingham pizza restaurant earns national honors

Birmingham’s Slice Pizza & Brew made it a double at the first Pizza Industry Excellence (PIE) Awards presented by the trade publication Pizza Today.

The family-owned pizza business won two PIE Awards — one for Most Interesting Menu and the other for Pizza Company of the Year by Region: Southeast.

Pizza Today launched the PIE Awards in 2023 “to honor pizzeria operators and help celebrate their business accomplishments,” according to the Pizza Today website. The inaugural winners were announced earlier this month.

Slice Pizza & Brew is the only Alabama winner in the PIE Awards’ 23 categories. For a list of all the winners, go here.

“We are incredibly honored to have received these national recognitions for not only our menu but also our company as a whole,” Slice Pizza & Brew co-owner Chris Bajalieh said in a media release.

“These awards are not just a win for us but for every single person who has been a part of our journey thus far — most importantly, our incredible team members, loyal customers and future customers. None of this would be possible without each one of you, and we are so grateful for your support.

“We promise to keep pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, continuing our commitment to serve the freshest, finest, and most flavorsome handcrafted pizza and local craft beers,” Bajalieh added.

Bajalieh and his two brothers, Jason Bajalieh and the late Jeff Bajalieh, opened the first Slice Pizza & Brew in Birmingham’s Lakeview District in 2011. They have since added locations in Vestavia Hills, Crestline Park and Montevallo, with a fifth location opening in Homewood’s Edgewood neighborhood later this year.

The Slice Pizza & Brew menu features a range of specialty pizzas, including the Bajalieh Special (bacon, grilled red onions and banana peppers), the Wing and a Prayer (braised chicken, bacon, green and red onions, blue cheese crumbles, ranch dressing and hot sauce), and the Soul Pie (turnip greens, black-eyed peas, Conecuh Sausage, grilled red onions, bacon, pepper jack and cheddar cheese).
