Birmingham officers injured after DUI suspect crashes into patrol car, police say

Two Birmingham police officers were injured Thursday when a drunk driver crashed into their patrol car, authorities said Friday.

The Birmingham 911 Communications Division received a call about a traffic incident just after 5 p.m. Thursday in the 6500 block of First Avenue North involving two vehicles and a Birmingham police patrol vehicle, the department said.

An East Precinct wreck investigator arrived on the scene and learned the suspect, identified as 56-year-old Birmingham resident Roger Smith, was driving a 2020 Kia Amanti when he crashed the car into the two East Precinct officers who were stopped at a traffic light.

The impact caused the patrol vehicle to collide with a third vehicle.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived on the scene and took both officers to UAB Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The wreck investigator took Smith into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Friday, police charged Smith with DUI.
