Birmingham News Player of the Week: Dual threat on offense earns Week 1 honor
The top vote-getter in the Week 1 Hollis Wright Birmingham News football Player of the Week poll was an offensive threat rushing and receiving in a season-opening victory.
Fultondale junior running back/strong safety Jeremiah Jackson finished with a big lead in the balloting, earning 7,284 of the 23,985 votes cast. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder had 20 carries for 130 yards and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass as the Wildcats beat Linden 34-26 on Friday.
Corner running back Spencer Unruh was second in the balloting, earning 5,080 votes – 21 percent – for his efforts in a road win at Winfield. The 6-1, 194-pound junior rolled up 245 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and also had a TD reception in the 32-13 win.
Keegan Horn of Hueytown finished third in the voting, gathering 4,513 votes – 18.8 percent. Horn, a 6-3, 220-pound junior defensive lineman, had five solo tackles – four for a loss – with three assists, a sack and a touchdown in a 28-7 loss to defending state champion Clay-Chalkville.
