Birmingham murder suspect captured after running across I-65, stopping traffic
A Birmingham murder suspect was taken into custody Thursday after a police chase that ended with the suspect stopping traffic as he dashed across all lanes of traffic on Interstate 65.
Elantra Bass, 26, is charged with murder in the 2021 slaying of Eric Henderson, who authorities said was strangled, hit over the head with a bottle and then put into a kitchen pantry in a vacant apartment at 14 Watertown Circle.
Bass, who was out of jail on $100,000 bond, was set to go on trial last month but didn’t show up. A warrant was then issued for failure to appear.
On Thursday, members of BPD’s Special Operations Bureau’s Specialized Teams were working on a scheduled graduation detail when they spotted Bass, who they knew was wanted.
The officers attempted to make a traffic stop on Bass at the intersection of Bessemer Road and Avenue W, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.
Bass refused to stop and fled in his vehicle. A chase ensued.
Bass got onto I-65 North. He bailed from the car near 16th Street North and I-65 North, fleeing on foot across the interstate.
Video posted to social media showed Bass running up an embankment along the interstate and climbing over a chain-link fence.
Officers with the department’s tactical unit and Special Enforcement Team quickly captured Bass in the 1300 block of Sixth Street North.
Wade said Bass was taken to police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. He will be held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
Birmingham police responded to 14 Watertown Circle just after 3 p.m. Monday.
Henderson was killed nearly four years ago.
An off-duty police officer called a dispatcher shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, asking for police after someone approached the officer and reported the possibility of a dead body.
Police responded and discovered Henderson’s body. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded and pronounced the victim dead on the scene shortly before 4 p.m.
Bass was detained, questioned by detectives and ultimately charged.
Bass and Henderson both lived in the apartment complex.
