Birmingham mother killed in crossfire as dozens of shots led to fiery crash, records state
A Birmingham woman killed in a hail of bullets last month was caught in deadly crossfire, according to court records made public Wednesday.
Jasmine Price, the 33-year-old mother of a 4-year-old girl, was killed Jan. 13 in the 800 block of First Street West in Birmingham’s College Hills neighborhood.
Birmingham police earlier this week announced the arrest of 26-year-old Raquan Wilson. He is charged with reckless murder.
Newly released court records state that Wilson fired shots at someone else that day, prompting the initial target to return fire in self-defense which “did thereby cause the death of Jasmine Clevette Price.”
The person who actually fired the fatal shot is not charged.
Price was killed after at least 40 rounds were fired that Friday morning.
Moments later, her white SUV crashed into a small apartment building and burst into flames.
Price was still inside the SUV.
Once firefighters extinguished the flames, they found Price inside the wreckage. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Price’s family remembered her as a “beautiful soul.”
“She was loving, giving, genuine, caring and just someone you can truly count on,’’ said her sister, Raquel Jackson. “That’s what led to her death, helping someone, giving someone a ride.”
Price leaves behind her husband, Ladarius, and 4-year-old daughter Jasity. Family said she was a dedicated mother.
“For her to be snatched away as an innocent victim from the joy and love of her over a senseless violent crime has torn the family to pieces,’’ Jackson said.
Wilson surrendered to the Jefferson County Jail Monday. He is being held without bond.
