Birmingham Monopoly unveiled: Which Magic City landmarks made the cut?
The new Birmingham edition of the Monopoly board game, officially licensed by Hasbro with all the classic game-playing pieces, was unveiled today, and you can now play the legendary board game with Magic City landmarks.
So, which of the city’s famous spots made the game board?
There’s a mix of old and new, classic and contemporary.
Atlantic City squares are replaced by well-established Birmingham businesses, non-profits and landmarks.
The Birmingham board will include a customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards, and Monopoly money.
Rotary Trail and Railroad Park among the first sites you can land on as you pass Go.
Sites include Boutwell Auditorium and the “heaviest corner on earth” at the John Hand Building. Then you’ve got Kelly Ingram Park, the Sidewalk Film Center, Southern Museum of Flight and Birmingham Museum of Art.
The BJCC, Protective Stadium and Legacy Arena each have a space.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute are on the board, along with Sloss Furnaces and Vulcan Park and Museum.
Businesses featured on the playing board include Golden Rule BBQ & Grill, Pepper Place Market, the Alabama Peanut Company, Seibels Camp & Cottage Outfitters, Memory Lane, At Home Furnishings and Legacy Credit Union.
“We’re thrilled to have a game that showcases the landmarks, businesses and places that make Birmingham truly special,” said Cornell Wesley, director of Innovation and Economic Opportunity for the City of Birmingham.
“We appreciate all those who suggested landmarks, organizations and businesses that make Birmingham so unique and truly special,” said Katie Hubbard, spokesperson for Top Trumps USA, which produced the board game under license with Hasbro.
Monopoly community editions sell for $44.99 and include Branson, Lake Tahoe, Kansas City, Scottsdale, Napa Valley, San Antonio and other cities, now including Birmingham.
MONOPOLY: Birmingham Edition will be available in stores and online at retail partners, including Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Kulture City, Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Sidewalk Film Center, Birmingham Museum of Art, Memory Lane, At Home Furnishings, Golden Rule BBQ & Grill, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces, Bromberg’s, Protective Life Insurance, and Smith’s Variety.
You may have seen some off-brand “opoly” versions out there for various towns and cities in Alabama, but game officials say this will be the first city in Alabama with an authorized, Hasbro-approved Monopoly community edition.
“If you pull up an ‘opoly’ and a Monopoly, they look very different,” said Hubbard.
