Birmingham mayor says ‘it is time to stand by’ Biden after call with president
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin says he “fully” supports President Joe Biden after a conference call the chief executive had with more than 200 democratic mayors.
The call, on Tuesday, was part of the Biden White House’s continuing bid to strengthen his position within the Democratic Party following his showing in a debate with former President Donald Trump last month.
Earlier this week Biden, in a letter to congressional Democrats and other statements, has refused calls to drop his candidacy and called for party unity following his debate performance, which got low marks from supporters.
In a statement, Woodfin stated his support for Biden and “his vision for our nation.”
“I participated in the president’s call this week with mayors,” Woodfin said.
“He was steadfast in his commitment to lead our nation for the next four years. The people selected President Biden as our nominee, not politicos and mega donors. It is time to stand by him and support his agenda to grow our middle class, make healthcare more accessible and affordable, and revitalize our cities.”
According to The Hill, during the 40-minute call, Biden discussed how he would focus on reducing costs for working families if elected to a second term. He also talked about making prescription drug prices more affordable, community college free and implementing universal background checks for gun purchases, in addition to an assault rifle ban.
“The Biden-Harris administration is making transformative investments in cities like Birmingham through grants like CHOICE Neighborhoods and Reconnecting Communities. I support him to finish the job in a second term,” Woodfin said.
