Birmingham man is alleged shooter, 3rd person indicted in Alabama murder-for-hire that left 1 dead

A Birmingham man is the third person charged in an alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy in Alabama that left a 46-year-old man dead in Sylacauga.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Markkeis Antwain Towns, 31, for capital murder/murder for hire in the slaying of Bradford Franklin Isbell.

Previously indicted were Kiera Monthelia Turner, 28, of Leeds, and Allana Amani Reid, 30. Both are also charged with capital murder/murder for hire in Isbell’s death.

Isbell was killed about 10 p.m. on June 23, 2021, on Harper Springs Road in Sylacauga. Police found Isbell dead outside the home.

Officers also found Rachel Elizabeth Hayes, 32, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham and survived.

Investigators at the time said they didn’t believe the shooting was random, but no arrests were made.

The Jefferson County grand jury issued the indictments against Towns, Turner and Reid on March 8.

Towns’ indictment was made public Tuesday. He is already serving a prison sentence for a 2023 guilty plea in a manslaughter case.

He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Monday to face the new capital murder charge.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office led the investigation into the murder-for-hire case but officials there have not elaborated on what launched the probe and the reason for their involvement in the case.

The indictment states Towns was contracted or hired to kill Isbell. Records state another suspect involved in the deadly shooting, but court records don’t yet he has been indicted in that case, so AL.com is not yet naming him.

That fourth suspect is also already in prison for unrelated crimes.
