Birmingham man found under vehicle after shootout with Brighton officer in Midfield, police say

A Birmingham man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he shot at a Brighton police officer over the weekend in western Jefferson County.

Willie Dave Williams, 47, is charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, certain persons forbidden to possess a pistol and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Midfield police Chief Jesse Bell said the ordeal began about 9:45 p.m. Saturday when his officers were dispatched to the 10 block of Hoadley Street on a report of shots fired into a home.

The homeowner told police a relative had fired the shots following a disagreement.

Officers were not able to find the suspect and cleared the area.

At 10:10 p.m., Bell said, officers were called back to the residence when the homeowner called 911 to report the suspect had returned.

They arrived to find the suspect running from the back yard into a nearby wooded area.

Brighton police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to the call for assistance and set up a perimeter.

A Brighton officer heard movement in the woods near where the suspect had entered and turned on his spotlight, Bell said. He then encountered Williams and ordered him to show his hands.

The suspect fired multiple rounds at the officer, and the officer returned fire.

Star 1 helicopter arrived, and Williams was taken into custody a short time later. He was hiding under a vehicle in the back yard of a nearby home.

Bell said fortunately no one was injured.

Williams is in the Midfield City Jail awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County bond. His bond is set at $73,000.
