Birmingham man found dead in Georgia jail cell with ‘numerous lacerations’

A Birmingham man being held in a Georgia jail died in his cell last week with “numerous lacerations” on his body, authorities said Monday.

The death of Jonathan McWaters, 25, is under investigation, the DeKalb County, Georgia Sheriff’s Office told Atlanta radio station 95.5 WSB.

McWaters was being held in the jail since June following his arrest on multiple felony indictments, the station said. It was unclear what charges he was facing.

On June 28, deputies were told McWaters was suffering from “numerous lacerations on his body,” WSB reported.

Preliminary reports suggested the Birmingham man’s wounds were self-inflicted, the station said.

McWaters became unresponsive and died in the cell after jail and medical staff unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him.

The sheriff’s office’s Office of Professional Standards is investigating McWaters’ death.
