Birmingham man already charged with one homicide now charged in another
A Birmingham man already charged in connection with one man’s death is now facing a second murder charge.
Brandon Quartez Jemison, 41, is charged with murder in the Sept. 24 slaying of 34-year-old Damone Gardner, Birmingham police announced Monday.
West Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert in the 300 block of 27th Street S.W. shortly before 8:30 p.m. that Tuesday.
They arrived to find Gardner unresponsive in the middle of the road. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.
The gunfire detection system registered two shots fired.
Authorities said an argument took place between Gardner and Jemison, possibly linked to the shooting death of Gardner’s best friend that took place several hours earlier.
That friend, 26-year-old Malike Williams, was fatally shot about 5 p.m. at Big Boy Convenience Store on Pearson Avenue. Williams died en route to UAB Hospital.
Police at the time said the deadly shooting possibly stemmed from a dispute over a social media post.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald previously said, “One party had a gun, the second party had a gun, and one of those males fired shots.”
Jemison and Williams, believed to be related, were the two men involved in the confrontation with the shooter, police said. Jemison fled the scene after Williams was shot.
Police previously said the third man fired the shots that killed Williams, and he was justified in defending himself because Williams was the aggressor.
Jemison was charged with felony murder in Williams’ death, court documents state, by “participating in the attempted murder of” the intended victim, who was able to shoot first and kill Williams.
Jemison is also charged with attempted murder of the intended victim.
