Birmingham Legion to debut stylish new jersey against Atlanta United

Pro soccer team Birmingham Legion FC released images of a stylish new jersey on Friday, one day before its big home preseason game against MLS foe Atlanta United.

Birmingham takes on Atlanta at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Protective Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. but has been moved back due to weather. General admission tickets are $15 for the game. Legion begins its sixth season in the USL Championship in March. Season tickets start at $155 for the popular supporters section.

The new jerseys — or “kits,” as they’re referred to in soccer — are a nod to the Lady Electra statue on the old Alabama Power building in downtown Birmingham. The Lady Electra kits feature lightning bolts on the shirts and an image of Lady Electra.

The new uniforms represent Legion’s “golden era,” according to the team, and will be available to purchase at Saturday’s game. Legion is using jersey manufacturer Hummel for the 2024 season after previously partnering with Nike. Hummel has long been a popular brand among soccer fans and Legion’s debut Hummel jerseys are easily the club’s most attractive in franchise history.

“Coated in gold, our debut Hummel jersey brings to life the fiery spirit and standard of excellence our fans know and love,” said a statement by the team.

Legion is one of the most consistently competitive teams in the USL Championship, making the playoffs every season since Birmingham’s pro soccer debut in 2019. The team advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 before losing 2-1 to Charleston Battery.

Last season represented a banner campaign for Birmingham Legion. In addition to the playoff run, Legion advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup with a home victory against MLS opponent Charlotte FC. Birmingham’s pro soccer team set an attendance record for the game against Charlotte and then shattered that mark in the next round of the Open Cup.

Legion’s controversial 1-0 loss to Inter Miami CF in the quarterfinals of the Open Cup remains a bitter memory for the city of Birmingham. The game was marred by a clear no call inside Miami’s penalty box that should have resulted in a penalty kick for Legion.

On the play, an Inter Miami defender used his hand to block a shot by Legion attacker Prosper Kasim. Legion set an attendance record of over 18,000 fans for the game.
