Birmingham Legion FC soccer club makes coaching change
Birmingham Legion FC has parted ways with head coach Tom Soehn, the USL club announced this week.
A Chicago native, Soehn had been Legion FC’s head coach since the franchise was founded in 2018. However, Birmingham did not qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 2024, and was off to an 0-2-2 start to this season.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision and one that was not taken lightly, because Tommy played a pivotal role in building the foundation of this club,” Legion FC Chief Soccer Officer and CEO Jay Heaps said. “However, results and performances have not progressed, and we felt a change was necessary at this time to move the club forward. We thank Tommy for his hard work and dedication to our organization and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
First Team Assistant Eric Avila has been installed as interim coach. Legion FC is back in action at 4 p.m. Sunday vs. El Paso Locomotive at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
The 58-year-old Soehn, who led Legion FC to 90 victories and 37 draws in 207 matches as head coach, released a statement on his departure via social media.
“Found out this morning that I no longer will be coaching the Birmingham Legion,” Soehn wrote on X. “Wanted to thank all the staff I was able to work beside over the last 6 years. Your hard work, dedication and loyalty will always be cherished. It was a pleasure working with each and every one of you.”
