Birmingham karaoke bar closing after 20 years ‘was about community, joy and a little bit of magic’
There’ll be sad songs for Starz Karaoke Lounge – the longtime Birmingham nightspot will be closing after more than two decades.
The club, off U.S. 280, announced Wednesday the “bittersweet decision to officially close its doors.” It celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.
The owner gave no reason for closing in an announcement on Facebook.
“To every person who ever grabbed a mic, sang their heart out, celebrated a birthday, danced like no one was watching, or simply made Starz part of their weekend routine — thank you,” the announcement stated. “You didn’t just fill the room with sound — you filled it with life.”
The decision was lamented by those familiar with the stage, both accomplished singers and those who are better off staying in the shower.
“I came out of my shell performing even though I was already a good singer, singing on a small stage was nerve racking,” wrote Ben Catchings III. “This place was never just about karaoke. It was about community, joy, and a little bit of magic on stage.”
Mitch Gilbert wrote, “I used to come by all the time when Birmingham was part of my work territory. Changed jobs and I haven’t been in the ‘Ham’ as much but happened to be in town today so decided to drive out tonight and saw the news that the decision was made to shut it down.”
The club owner thanked patrons for their support over the years.
“Though the lights have dimmed, the memories will echo for years to come,” the post reads.
