Birmingham is one of the 10 least friendly metros for commuters and the environment

Birmingham is the eighth least friendly metro area in the country for commuters and the environment according to a recent study conducted by coworking management platform Yardi Kube using Census data from the 50 largest metros in the U.S.

The average Birmingham metro commute received a score of 56/100 in Yardi Kube’s ranking, a far cry below the highest scoring commute, Buffalo, NY, with an 85.3/100.

This score came from a combination of average travel time (26.2 minutes for Birmingham metro commuters), what percentage of people’s income goes towards commute costs (2.7% Birmingham), what percentage of people commute in a metro (39.2% Birmingham), how many commuters drive more than an hour to work (5.4% Birmingham), and an eco-friendly category based on what a metro’s annual CO2 emissions are (2,465 lbs. Birmingham).

While Buffalo’s annual CO2 emissions (2,449 lbs.) place them closer to Birmingham’s eco-friendliness, commuters had a shorter average travel time of 20.3 minutes and the annual amount of income commuters spent ranked almost a full percent lower at 1.8%.

Many of the smaller cities included in the Birmingham metro area are the most impacted by difficult commutes, as the Lede previously reported.
