Birmingham Goodwill seeks help after vandals on forklifts cause $150,000 damage in âsenseless actâ
An investigation is underway after vandals smashed their way into a Birmingham Goodwill store, causing at least $150,000 in damage.
Birmingham police responded to the building on Green Springs Highway at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers arrived on the scene to find damage to a door, an office, and walls.
“There was too much damage to estimate,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.
Police brought out a tracking dog in case the burglar or burglars were still inside, but they quickly cleared the building.
No arrests have been made.
Kathy Taylor, Alabama Goodwill vice president for marketing and development, said the vandals wreaked havoc.
They broke in through the glass front door where donations are dropped off and, once inside, made their way to the back of the building where the Goodwill Outlet is housed.
The intruders fired up Goodwill’s forklifts and began to ram them into walls. It appears one of the forklifts got stuck in a metal fencing inside the store, or it would have been worse, Taylor said.
“There’s really nothing to steal in the outlet,’’ Taylor said. “They were just ramming them into walls.”
“I don’t know if it’s a random act, people getting bored in the cold,’’ she said.
Goodwill is still waiting on an officials estimate from insurance adjusters, but said the damage is expected to total $150,000 if not more.
The store had recently completed renovations which included all new paint and graphics.
Taylor called it a “senseless act” that left the store in disrepair. They spent Thursday morning cleaning up broken glass and other debris and were able to open midday.
Taylor said they are seeking monetary donations to help cover the costs of repairs, but any donation will help.
“I have no idea why somebody would do this,’’ she said. “It was a bad kickoff to 2024.”
