Birmingham gets its own Monopoly edition
Mr. Monopoly, meet Mr. Mayor.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin announced Tuesday that Birmingham will be getting an officially licensed Monopoly edition, coming next year.
“Birmingham will have its very own version of the Monopoly board game, which I think is pretty cool,” Woodfin said.
Woodfin said he has cherished childhood memories of playing Monopoly on family fun nights growing up.
“It was the one game we all played together as a family,” Woodfin said.
You may have seen some off-brand “opoly” versions out there for various towns and cities in Alabama, but game officials say this will be the first city in Alabama with an authorized, Hasbro-approved Monopoly community edition.
“If you pull up an ‘opoly’ and a Monopoly, they look very different,” said Katie Hubbard, an official with Top Trumps USA, the American division of Winning Moves International, which holds the rights with Hasbro to create official Monopoly versions.
The game will debut in March 2024, under license from toy and game company Hasbro.
Before then, Hasbro welcomes your input on what should be included in the game.
Some mock-ups shared at a press conference on Tuesday included attractions such as the McWane Center, the Birmingham Zoo and Vulcan Park. Those are not definitively included yet.
“We don’t know,” Hubbard said. “These are just things that could potentially be on there. We just want to know: is Vulcan Park important to the city? There’s hundreds of amazing things in the city and only 22 property squares, so we’re trying to make sure we do our best.”
The game will also include established businesses and streets. Companies have to agree to be included.
“We’ll talk to them,” Hubbard said. “It’s Hasbro’s game, so at the end of the day Hasbro has to approve who is on here as well, to make sure this game lasts as long as possible. We want to feature credible places that have longevity. This is the only time we’re building an edition for Birmingham. We want it to stay relevant as long as possible.”
Atlantic City squares will be replaced by well-established Birmingham businesses, non-profits and landmarks. The Birmingham board will include a customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards, and Monopoly money.
For those who have suggestions about what to include on the board, send suggestions to [email protected] for consideration by Aug. 21.
“We’re going to take suggestions until the middle of August,” Hubbard said. “Then it goes to production to get all the inventory and make it beautiful and then it goes to the factory, so we’ll launch in mid-March.”
Monopoly community editions sell for $44.99 and include Branson, Lake Tahoe, Kansas City, Scottsdale, Napa Valley, San Antonio and other cities.
