Birmingham firm Landing lays off more employees

Landing, the Birmingham-based company that rents apartments with flexible leases, laid off more employees today after previous rounds last year.

Bill Smith, the company’s founder and CEO, told AL.com in an email on Wednesday evening that the company laid off nine employees in Birmingham. He declined to share more details.

“We laid off a small number of roles today,” he said. “Some of the roles were temporary employees.”

Landing operates a nationwide network of fully-furnished apartments through a membership model, providing access to leases as short as a month in exchange for a $199 annual fee in addition to monthly rent.

In 2021, the company’s leadership moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Birmingham, Smith’s hometown.

Since then, the company has had at least two rounds of layoffs at the end of last year.

In October 2022, Landing announced it was laying off 110 employees nationally, and reshuffling another 70 positions to different locations Then, more layoffs – an undisclosed number – came in December. It’s unclear how many of those roles were based in Birmingham.

Landing’s headquarters is in the John Hand Building downtown, at 17 20th St. N. The company also has two other offices, in San Francisco and Mexico City, Mexico. Smith, who is also the founder of shopping app Shipt, founded Landing in 2019.
