Birmingham firefighters rescue critically injured person trapped in burning apartment

Fire swept through a small west Birmingham apartment building Wednesday night, leaving one person with critical injuries.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched at 8:30 p.m. to the apartments on the corner of Warrior Road and Prince Avenue. The initial report was that there were people possibly trapped on the second floor.

Battalion Chief Jackie Hicks said when firefighters arrived on the scene, there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the top floor.

“We went in and did a search and rescue immediately also while knocking down the fire,’’ Hicks said.

One person was found alone and trapped in an apartment. That victim was pulled out of the blaze by firefighters and rushed to UAB Hospital. Hicks said the victim is in critical condition.

A second person sustained minor injuries and already has been treated and released. No firefighters were injured.

Several residents stood outside the building wrapped in blankets provided by first responders. There are eight units in the apartment building, but Hicks said he didn’t yet know how many people the fire displaced.

As of 9:30 p.m., firefighters were still putting out hotspots.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
