Birmingham doctor convicted of dragging woman by hair, stabbing her, throwing bourbon barrel top at her
A Birmingham doctor has been convicted of first-degree domestic violence in an attack on a woman with whom he was in a relationship.
Dr. Brett Tyler Wahlgren, a former UAB anesthesiologist, was initially charged with attempted murder and first-degree domestic violence in March.
Authorities said the 41-year-old Wahlgren on March 19 attacked the victim by throwing the top of a bourbon barrel and a chair at her before repeatedly punching her in the face and slamming her head against a granite countertop.
Wahlgren then dragged the victim by the hair through the kitchen used one of the knives from knife block in that kitchen to stab her.
Wahlgren testified that the victim was injured by the knife while in the process of him attempting to take his own life.
Wahlgren’s trial began Sept. 19 before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Kechia Davis. The jury returned the guilty verdict on the domestic violence charge Friday afternoon.
Jefferson County deputy district attorneys Amanda Wineman and Warren Brooks prosecuted the case. Wahlgren was represented by attorneys Bill Dawson and Tommy Spina.
The case was investigated by Birmingham police. Wahlgren has been held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail since March 19.
Sentencing is set for Nov. 7.
