Birmingham dive bar closing its doors after 30 years: ‘It has been a wild ride’

After more than 30 years of service in the Five Points South community, dive bar Marty’s PM will permanently close on Jan. 3, the business recently announced.

“It has been a wild ride and the honor of our lives serving you,” reads a post made to the Marty’s PM Facebook page Friday morning.

“We have more to say, but for now we are focusing on the last few nights of merriment and memory making ahead of us. Please join us Friday Dec 27, Tuesday Dec 31, and our final night Jan 3.”

“Bring your favorite Marty’s stories and your friend who has never stayed up late enough to try our famous patty melt,” the post continued.

“We’ll take care of the rest. See you soon, Birmingham.”

As of 3 p.m. on Friday, the post received hundreds of responses mourning the loss of a favorite late-night spot for many.

“I hate to hear this,” one person wrote.

“Marty’s has been an institution in this town for late night food and drinks.”

“I’m sad to see Marty’s go,” another wrote.

“I have so many memories from back in the day. All the gigs I played and all the good times!”

The bar, which is open every day except Tuesdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., first became popular in the early 90s with people looking for a drink or a bite past closing time for other establishments.

Current owners Phillip and Marsha Mims own two other locations in Irondale and Trussville under the same name, and have not announced any plans for additional closures.
