Birmingham Design Review Committee: updates to 1917-era theatre district storefront leads approvals
Twice a month, the city of Birmingham’s Design Review Committee convenes to discuss plans to make alterations to structures that fall within one of the city’s many historic and commercial revitalization districts. This column summarizes recent DRC activity with projects grouped by type and location. This edition of Design Review recaps the DRC meeting from March 22, 2023.
Decisions of the DRC, and applicants are responsible to carry out the plans as presented and approved. Any deviations from the approved plans cannot be undertaken without a return to the committee for approval.
Avondale / 41st Street
Exterior Renovations – 4105 Fourth Avenue South – Representatives for Pure Taqueria, the new tenant at the former Melt location, presented plans for exterior renovations. The project plans include adding an extension in the front and rear storage. The signage for Pure Taqueria was also presented as part of the project. Originally, the signage plan matched the branding based on the old Pure gas station signs. Committee members informed the presenters that pole signs were no longer allowed in this district and requested instead to attach the signage to the building. There will also be garage-style doors installed, external lighting for signage, and a desert look with date palms, yucca, and river rock for landscaping. Committee members expressed concerns about plant compatibility as these plants do not normally do well in Birmingham’s climate. Finally, fencing on the property will also be replaced.
The committee approved with the condition that the sign be attached to the building.
