Birmingham City Jail inmate dies at hospital after found unresponsive in housing area

A Birmingham City Jail inmate died Thursday after he was found unresponsive.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Omar La Keith Johnson. He was 48.

Johnson was booked into the city jail Oct. 3 to serve a probation violation sentence for Violation of the State Firearms Act.

At 8:33 a.m. Thursday, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates, another inmate found Johnson unresponsive in his housing area.

Johnson was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m.

Yates said there is no evidence to suggest trauma or foul play. An autopsy will be performed today.
