Birmingham capital murder suspect was in court on rape, kidnapping charges hours before man found slain
A 34-year-old suspect is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a Birmingham man found slain inside his home during a welfare check.
Larry Dewayne Kimble Jr., 34, is charged in the slaying of 43-year-old Bryan Keith Williams. Jail records indicate the charge is a capital crime because Williams was killed during a robbery.
On the same day that Williams’ body was discovered on 13th Avenue North, Kimble was in a Jefferson County courtroom to go on trial for kidnapping and rape.
The trial ended before it started, however, because the victim testified under oath that if she was called to testify in a trial, she would say that the charges against Kimble weren’t true.
Birmingham’s South Precinct officers were dispatched to Williams’ home in the 4300 block of 13th Avenue North in the city’s Kingston neighborhood just before 1 p.m. Monday, June 26.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said a friend stopped by to see Williams, finding the front door open and the house in disarray.
The friend did not see Williams at that point but became concerned and called 911 for a wellness check.
Officers entered the home and found Williams unresponsive on the floor. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Wade said the victim was fatally shot. It wasn’t immediately clear when he was last known to be alive.
Authorities believe that Williams was killed about 9 p.m. on June 25. Kimble and others were at the home supposedly to buy drugs, but investigators believe it was a set up to rob the victim.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led detectives to Kimble, but he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 1:31 p.m. Wednesday. He is being held without bond.
Hours before Williams’ body was found, Kimble was in a Jefferson County courtroom to face the kidnapping and rape charges that stemmed from a 2020 arrest by Trussville police. A woman told police that Kimble had taken her against her will and driven her to St. Clair County where she said she was raped.
On June 26, that 2020 case was set to go to trial. Instead, the case had to be dismissed after the victim testified under oath that she would not cooperate with the prosecution.
Kimble, who has a lengthy criminal record dating back more than a decade, was arrested in April on charges of attempting to elude, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He also is facing trial after being indicted on multiple charges of trafficking Oxycodone, receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana. Jefferson County prosecutors this week filed a motion to have Kimble’s bonds in those cases revoked in light of his new capital murder charge, and Jefferson County Circuit Judge Alaric May granted that request today.
