Birmingham-born filmmaker brings ‘House of David’ to Prime Video
Birmingham-born filmmaker Jon Erwin has another story to tell, and it looks like his biggest and most ambitious yet.
“The first script I ever wrote, in 2012, was the life of David,” said Erwin, who co-wrote and co-directed a surprise hit with the 2023 movie “Jesus Revolution” starring Kelsey Grammer.
When Jon was 16, his father, Hank Erwin, a former Alabama legislator and Christian radio talk show host on WDJC-FM in Birmingham, bought him his first video camera, a Canon XL 1.
“I had a lot to learn as a filmmaker,” Jon Erwin said. “It’s been the story that I’ve always dreamed of telling, ever since I went to Israel with my Dad at 16, went to Jerusalem, with my first camera. We made this documentary series called ‘In the Steps of Jesus.’ The Bible just came to life.”
Erwin kept his script on the life of David and has turned it into the first season of “House of David,” a TV series that begins airing Feb. 27 on Amazon Prime, with three episodes available this week and one new episode a week through April 3, viewable in more than 240 countries.
“To tell it on Prime Video, it’s the first global release of my career,” Erwin said. “To be able to explore this person’s life over eight hours is really cool. I love what we’ve made. I can’t wait for the audience to see it.”
If it resonates with the streaming TV audience, as his movies such as “Jesus Revolution” and “I Can Only Imagine” connected with movie audiences, there could be more to come.
“The script I wrote would encompass three seasons,” Erwin said in a Zoom interview from his home in Franklin, Tenn. “We’ve done one of three. We’ll see if, God willing, we can finish it.”
The story of David lends itself to a streaming TV series format, starting with David as a child, being a shepherd who plays music, eventually becoming musician to the king, and then volunteering to fight the giant, Goliath.
“The first season is the origin story, the hero’s journey, of a boy chosen to be king in a nation that already has one and who does not want to give up his power,” Erwin said. “It does involve a giant. It’s the ascent of a young man, this outcast, as he plays music for the king and as he quite possibly slays this giant; I won’t give it away, but it’s in the Bible. That’s season one. God willing, multiple seasons would just carry on that story. It’s such an odyssey. It’s an epic life lived.”
While it’s a biblical story, it has broad appeal.
“It’s almost in a different genre altogether,” Erwin said. “It’s really in that Lord of the Rings adventure epic kind of genre. There’s giants, and there’s Samuel the prophet, who’s a lot like a Gandalf-type character, and it really is the original coming-of-age story of a boy chosen to be king. If you like those type of stories, Like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, it will feel very familiar. The Bible is full of a lot of amazing stories.”
In 2023, Erwin launched a new independent studio to finance family-oriented films. The new studio, The Wonder Project, was founded by Erwin and former Netflix and YouTube executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten. They raised more than $75 million in seed capital and Series A funding from Sovereign’s Capital, Lionsgate, Powerhouse Capital, United Talent Agency, and Jason Blum, among others.
Erwin had previously formed the Kingdom Story company for him and his brother, Andrew, to produce Christian movies.
The Wonder Project made it possible to finance “House of David” and other projects appealing to a Christian family audience.
“There’s such an appetite for this type of content,” Erwin said.
Erwin said more than 700 people worked on producing the first season of “House of David,” which was filmed in Greece. “It’s one of the more gorgeous places on earth,” he said.
The story of David provides epic material. “It’s based on a bestseller,” Erwin said. “The book is good.”
David’s life was filled with plot twists and turns, triumphs and tragedies. “He always finds his way back to God,” Erwin said.
