Birmingham-based insurance company paces local stock report
As stocks rose just enough Thursday for Wall Street to barrel into a new bull market, there were more losers than winners on our Birmingham and Alabama Stock Report.
Birmingham-based ProAssurance Corporation topped the list, though, rising 4.3%. It is a property and casualty company that sells professional liability insurance to doctors.
Boeing, which has had a presence in Alabama for decades, was second-highest, rising 2.9% to close at $218.11 a share, just off its 52-week high of $221.33.
“Since 1962, Boeing’s Alabama facilities have been concentrated around Huntsville, Madison County, where the company supports the activities of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and military operations at Redstone Arsenal. The company currently employs about 2,700 people in the state, primarily as engineering and research support staff,” according to the Encyclopedia of Alabama.
Amazon was up a little more than $3, or 2.5%.
It has several operations sites with thousands of employees across Alabama, including Bessemer, Huntsville, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery and Theodore.
