Birmingham-based company invests $45 million in Walker County plant expansion
A Birmingham manufacturing and distribution company is planning a $45 million investment in its operations near Parrish in Walker County.
Nelson Brothers Inc. makes commercial and explosives chemicals for the mining industry, as well offering distribution, engineering and technical services.
The project will expand its plant and hire five new positions. The company currently employs 55 at the factory.
Last week, Gov. Kay Ivey announced a $252,900 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to replace and increase the size of a water line to the site.
“Nelson Brothers was founded nearly 70 years ago to meet a need in the mining industry, and it continues to thrive today,” Ivey said. “These funds will help the company continue to grow and serve its customers, while providing local jobs.”
The Parrish Water Works and Sewer Board plans to replace 5,400 feet of three-inch water line with six-inch piping and connect it to an existing six-inch line off Old Baltimore Road.
This will connect the line to a higher-elevation water tank and increase the water volume and pressure to meet fire protection requirements at the plant. It will also improve service for other water customers in the area.
The company was founded in 1956 by two brothers, Dugan and Olen Nelson, and has its headquarters in Birmingham. It also has facilities in Kentucky and Wyoming.
