Birmingham approves incentives for new branch of legendary BBQ rib joint downtown

The Birmingham City Council has approved incentives of up to $185,000 for the new Archibald & Woodrow’s BBQ restaurant set to open Friday in the former Rib-It-Up location at 830 First Ave. North.

Archibald and Woodrow Enterprises is investing about $80,000 to renovate the building and hire 20 new employees, the city said.

It’s expected to generate about $1.5 million in annual sales tax revenue.

The city signed a five-year revenue sharing agreement and two-year hiring incentive agreement for up to $185,000.

Woodrow Washington III, owner of Archibald and Woodrow, said there will be a ribbon-cutting Monday, May 5, at 3 p.m.

“We’re trying to open Friday for lunch,” said Washington, whose grandparents George and Betty Archibald started the business in 1962 in Northport. There is also a location in Tuscaloosa. The Birmingham location will be their first outside Tuscaloosa County.

“With the help of the City Council and the mayor, we were offered a façade grant,” he said. “We were able to do painting throughout the building, around the building, upgraded some structural issues, added siding, a lot of signage is coming.”

Both the original Archibald’s in Northport and the Archibald & Woodrow’s BBQ location on Greensboro Avenue in Tuscaloosa have a large and loyal Birmingham following. Washington has been hoping to open an Archibald’s in Birmingham for awhile.

He announced the upcoming added location in Birmingham in March.

There will be a dining room with seating for 60, walk-up take-out orders and drive-through.

“Whichever way they come, I’ll take it,” said Washington.
