Birmingham 19-year-old jailed in Shelby County on multiple child porn charges

A Birmingham man is in jail in Shelby County on nearly a dozen charges of possessing child porn.

James Wyatt Roberts, 19, is charged with 10 counts of possession of obscene matter containing visual depiction of persons under 17 years of age involved in obscene acts.

Charging documents against Roberts say that on Feb. 8, he was in possession of multiple photos of naked boys between the ages of 8 to 12.

The investigation began when the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office investigators in January received a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Authorities on Friday said they have no information to suggest the images were produced in or near Shelby County.

Roberts remains held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $150,000.

“Thanks to our partnership with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, we are able to continue to relentlessly pursue those who patronize the obscene images of children on the internet, which perpetrates the victimization of children,” said Sheriff John Samaniego.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at 205-670-6000. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777 or on their website at www.crimestoppersmetroal.com.
