Birmingham 16-year-old charged in shooting at Pelham shopping center during Marketplace transaction

A Birmingham teen has been charged in connection with a shooting Sunday in the parking lot of a Pelham shopping center.

The suspect’s name is being withheld because of his age. He is 16.

Authorities say the shooting happened during the sale of a cell phone brokered on Marketplace.

The teen is charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, first-degree assault and two counts of attempted murder, according to court records made public Tuesday.

The shooting happened at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the Southgate Village shopping center in Pelham. None of those involved lived in Pelham but met there for the transaction, police said.

The 16-year-old was standing outside the victim’s vehicle when he fired three times, according to police.

The 21-year-old victim was struck twice. Family posted on Facebook that he has undergone two surgeries for his injuries, which includes a shattered pelvis.

The victim’s girlfriend was with him at the time of the shooting and is listed as an attempted murder victim in court records.

The girlfriend was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, and the victim in the passenger’s seat when the shooting happened.

The young suspect ran to a nearby motel and left the area in a white car that was waiting for him. He was taken into custody in Birmingham within a few hours.

Police said both the suspect and the victim brought guns to the transaction.

Police said while public parking lots during daylight hours are generally safe places to conduct marketplace transactions, citizens must consider that risks exist.

“If anything about the environment or individuals involved causes any concern, we recommend canceling the transaction,’’ police said in a statement.

The Pelham Police Department does offer two “Safe Trade Zone” parking spaces marked with green paint on the south side of their building at 32 Philip Davis Street.
