Bird thief returns rare, $1,000 parakeet to Mobile pet shop

The power of social media was on full display for a Mobile pet shop after a woman walked out of the store with a $1,000 bird stuffed in her purse.

The incident happened Sunday at the B&B Pet Shop on Cottage Hill Road. Owners Bill Trufant and his sister, Sally Trufant, discovered the rare Sun Conure, also known as the sun parakeet, missing from its cage.

The Sun Conure is native to South America and is valuable because they are listed as endangered due to loss of habitat and trapping for plumage or the pet trade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

In a post to the store’s Facebook page, the owners said the woman can be clearly seen in surveillance video stealing the bird. They posted images from the video, asking for help in identifying the woman.

“We’re just a mom and pop pet store trying to run a decent business here,” they wrote, “and it’s hard enough these days without losing a $1000 bird!”

The response they received was overwhelming, to say the least. Facebook users responded with a slew of information, including the woman’s name, address, Facebook page, date of birth, phone number and social security number.

The Trufants said they handed the information over to Mobile police, but out of concern for the bird’s wellbeing and anxious for its safe return, they reached out to the woman directly and asked her to bring it back.

Tuesday morning, the woman walked into the store, this time with the bird in a cage. The Trufants said the bird appears to be unharmed.

“We are so grateful for your love, loyalty, and moral outrage,” they wrote in thanking those who helped track down the bird-napper, “and consider ourselves very lucky to be a member of this extraordinary community.”

The Trufants say they are still actively working with Mobile police on the case.
