Bio-slime and grime: Jeffco’s lowest rated restaurants of August
Restaurant or the set of a Nickelodeon show from the 90s?
It may be hard to tell the difference when looking through the lowest health scores of Jefferson County restaurants in August.
Along with the usual culprits like roaches and dead flies, county health inspectors last month cited eateries for infractions that included slime mold and bio-slime.
Seven restaurants scored below an 85 – the threshold that triggers a reinspection within 60 days — during August inspections.
Here they are, in order of highest to lowest score:
Sonic, 313 Valley Ave., Birmingham
Score: 83
Critical violations: 3
This drive-in chain had 13 points worth of critical violations following an Aug. 2 visit from the health department.
An employee was seen touching a pretzel stick with their bare hands, while others were observed not washing their hands for 15 seconds after any potential contamination like handling soiled utensils or using the toilet, the inspector wrote.
Cut tomatoes were also stored without proper date marking.
The inspector cited Sonic for dirty drink nozzles that contained “bio-slime and mildew.”
Roots & Revelry, 1623 Second Ave. North, Birmingham
Score: 82
Critical Violations: 3
Roots & Revelry lost 14 points from critical violations after an Aug. 23 inspection.
The inspector noticed a roach in the fine-dining restaurant’s flour bin, which cost Roots & Revelry four points.
It lost another five points because some foods were out of temperature.
Four points was deducted from the restaurant’s health rating for veal stock/duck stock, gumbo and etouffee that was opened past the seven-day limit mandated by the health department.
Salvatore’s Pizza, 1594 Montgomery Hwy., Hoover
Score: 82
Critical violations: 3
This Hoover pizzeria was dinged 13 points for three critical violations after an Aug. 10 inspection.
Salvatore’s was cited for alfredo and meat sauces and spaghetti being stored at lower than acceptable temperatures. The infraction cost the pizzeria five points.
Salvatore’s lost another four points for storing food without expiration labels.
An additional four points was deducted because the pizzeria didn’t have chemical test strips for sanitizing solution.
Popeye’s, 2239 Bessemer Rd., Birmingham
Score: 80
Critical violations: 3
The Bessemer Road Popeye’s lost 14 points from critical violations following an Aug. 8 visit from the health department.
Ten of those points came from foods stored at temperatures either above or below acceptable levels listed by the county.
Another four points was deducted from not having paper towels available at the handwash sink in the men’s bathroom and the inspector noticing a container in the handwashing sink in the kitchen.
Other infractions included grime on cooking equipment.
Munchie’s Chevron Powderly, 1800 31st St. SW, Birmingham
Score: 80
Critical violations: 3
This Chevron station in southwest Birmingham lost 13 points from critical violations after an Aug. 4 inspection.
The station was cited for not having sanitizer in the three-compartment sink or sanitizer buckets, which cost Munchie’s five points.
There was also no thermometer to measure internal temperatures or water temperature – a four-point deduction.
Another four points was knocked off Munchie’s score for a sink being used for both handwashing and dishwashing and not having a handwashing sink in the back area.
A cracked toilet bowl and low water pressure in the bathroom sink were also among the minor infractions incurred by the establishment.
Burger King #9834, 740 Academy Dr., Bessemer

This Burger King in Bessemer lost 14 points from critical violations after an Aug. 28 inspection.
The establishment was reinspected Aug. 30 and was given a 94 score.
During the initial inspection, the inspector wrote they noticed water dripping from the ceiling onto cooking surfaces, causing food to be contaminated. Burger King was deducted five points.
Another five points was lost from foods being out of temperature, with an additional four points deducted for hot water not being hot enough.
Other infractions included “grime and food product” observed in a cooler and on the outside of equipment.
Iguana Grill, 2085 Colonial Dr., Hoover
Score: 70
Critical violations: 5
Iguana Grill in Hoover has the dubious distinction of the lowest health rating of any Jefferson County restaurant inspected in August. It lost 22 points from critical violations after an Aug. 14 visit from the health department.
Iguana Grill’s worst violations, according to the inspection report, was for foods being at unacceptable temperatures. The infractions cost Iguana Grill 10 points.
Another four points was lost because of “slime mold” in the ice machine and “slime mold” in the bar soda gun. Dirty lids were also stored in a heavily soiled container in clean storage, according to the report.
Dead flies and roaches were also seen “throughout the kitchen.”
