Bill Self will not coach remainder of Big 12 tournament

Bill Self will not coach defending national champion Kansas in the remainder of the Big 12 tournament after suffering an undisclosed medical emergency on Wednesday.

Self, 60, visited the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City on Wednesday night and was treated with what school officials called a “standard procedure.” He remains a patient, but did not suffer a heart attack, according to a statement released by the University of Kansas Health System through the school.

“KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self is a patient at the University of Kansas Health System. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steve Stites wants to clarify that Coach Self did not suffer a heart attack, as reported by some media,” the statement read. “He arrived at the emergency department last night and underwent a standard procedure that went well. He is expected to make a full recovery.”

Top-seeded Kansas beat West Virginia 78-61 in a quarterfinal game on Thursday, with assistant coach Norm Roberts running the team in Self’s place. The Jayhawks (26-6) face Iowa State in a semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday.

Self is in his 20th season at Kansas, where he has won 784 games, 17 regular-season Big 12 championships and nine Big 12 tournament titles. His teams have reached four Final Fours and won national championships in 2008 in addition to last year.

“I am very grateful for the overwhelming number of well wishes my family and I have received,” Self said in a statement. “I’m excited to get back with my team in the very near future.”

It was not clear if Self would return to the sideline for the NCAA tournament, in which Kansas is expected to be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed.
