Kansas basketball coach Bill Self was released from a Kansas City hospital on Sunday following a heart-related emergency that caused him to miss the Big 12 tournament.

The 60-year-old Self was admitted to the University of Kansas Health System late Wednesday after complaining of “chest tightness and balance concerns.” According to a release issued Sunday by the school, Self underwent two heart catheterizations that resulted in stents being installed to treat blocked arteries, but “responded well to the treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Self has returned home to Lawrence and is “looking forward to rejoining the team this week,” according to the statement. With assistant coach Norm Roberts running the team, Kansas reached the Big 12 tournament championship game before losing to Texas 76-56 on Saturday.

“I’m so thankful for the amazing staff at the University of Kansas Health System for the excellent care I received,” Self said in a statement. “I am proud of our team and coaching staff for how they have handled this and am excited to be back with them as the best time of the season gets underway.”

Kansas (27-7) earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament West Regional and opens “March Madness” on Thursday against No. 16 Howard (22-12) in Des Moines, Iowa. The Jayhawks won their fourth NCAA tournament title — and second under Self — last season.

Self is in his 20th season at Kansas, where he has won nearly 800 games, with 17 regular-season Big 12 championships and nine Big 12 tournament titles. His teams have reached four Final Fours and won a national championship in 2008 in addition to last year.
