Big change could be coming to Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Skittles and more popular snacks

The Food and Drug Administration is phasing out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of 2026 – a change that could affect the color of several snack foods including Skittles and Flamin’ Hot Cheetoes.

“For the last 50 years, American children have increasingly been living in a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals,” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said at a press conference, according to CNBC.

The changes, reports CNBC, will affect several food producers including PepsiCo, General Mills, Mars and WK Kellogg.

The FDA has plans to set a “national standard” and timeline for the food industry to transition from petroleum-based food dyes to natural alternatives, according to Makary.

The announcement comes three months after federal officials moved to ban red dye No. 3 from the nation’s food supply, nearly 35 years after it was barred from cosmetics because of potential cancer risk. The ban removes the dye from the list of approved color additives in foods, dietary supplements and oral medicines.
